A Taste of Indigenous Culture

Dominica Necklace

Location: Kalinago Territory, Dominica; Material: A Variety of Seeds & Bamboo

I purchased this necklace on a school trip to a small, very off the grid Caribbean country in the West Indies called Dominica (for the record, it’s different from the Dominican Republic!).  On one of the days I was there, my class was able to visit the Kalinago territory of Dominica.  This part of Dominica is home to the descendants of the indigenous people of the island, called the Kalinago.  One of the many things we did while there was spend some time at a small stand that sold various goods made by hand by Kalinago people.  I purchased this beautiful necklace made of various tree seeds (the red one is from the red sandalwood tree) and bamboo.  It was so well priced (around $8), but in a country like Dominica, a little bit of money goes a long way.  I am so happy that I was able to give even a small amount to help make a difference in the livelihoods of the Kalinago, and I ended up with a beautifully intricate necklace!
