The Hand of Fatima

Location: Marrakesh, Morocco; Material: N/A

During our spring 2013 semester in college-when I studied abroad in India-my friend, Liz studied abroad in Morocco.  She came back with this lovely pair of earrings for me.  They depict the Hand of Fatima, which is an open right hand with an eye (the navy blue bead) embedded in it.  Similar to the Hamsa, this symbol is important in many Middle Eastern and North African countries because it is considered to be a sign of protection.  Liz bought these earrings at the Houk Market in Marrakesh.  She told me that along with these earrings, she bought a number of other things and sat down to have tea with the owner.  I wear them a lot because they go very easily with a number of different things!
